Why the same salary pays differently
- Federal tax and FICA are identical in every state at the same pay. All of the difference comes from the state and local layer.
- No state income tax: Texas (and Florida, Washington, Nevada, Tennessee and a few others) only take federal tax and FICA.
- Flat rates: Georgia 4.99% (from May 11, 2026), Illinois 4.95% and Michigan 4.25%, each after its own deduction or allowance.
- Graduated rates: California, New York, New Jersey and Ohio tax higher pay at higher rates, so the gap grows as salary rises.
- State payroll insurance: California SDI (1.3%, no cap), New Jersey UI, TDI and FLI, and New York SDI and Paid Family Leave come out of the paycheck too.
- City tax is not included above. NYC, Yonkers, Detroit and most Ohio cities add 1% to 4%. Use the state calculators to include it.
Method and assumptions
Federal withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T (2026), percentage method for Forms W-4 from 2020 or later, with no Step 2, 3 or 4 entries. Social Security is 6.2% up to $184,500 and Medicare 1.45%. Each state uses its own 2026 employer withholding formula, listed with its source on the methodology page and on each state page. Figures are withholding estimates, not a final tax bill and not tax advice. Your own paycheck depends on your W-4, benefits and local taxes: run it in the paycheck estimator Georgia, Texas wage calculator, wage calculator California or any state paycheck estimator.
